Sofia Weather

Sofia weather is predominantly moderate, characterized by four distinctive seasons and great seasonal temperature fluctuation. Sofia is at its hottest during August when temperatures generally reach averages of 26C, while January is the coldest month of the year with average temperatures hovering around 2C. Sofia weather is also typified by the abundant rainfall Bulgaria’s capital city enjoys, averaging around 650 millimeters or 25,6 inches per year, its levels increasing during the winter season and decreasing significantly during summer. Despite the predominantly fine weather of spring and autumn, weather patterns of both seasons are punctuated by frequent rainfalls.

Temperatures

Juxtaposed between the Balkan Mountains on the north and the Vitosha Mountain on the south, Sofia is located at an open plateau that stands at 550 meters or 1804 feet above sea level, thus experiencing moderately hot summers and cold and snowy winters, preserving its finest and most pleasant disposition for the spring and autumn seasons.
Daytime temperatures during January often drop to -4C while July experiences lows of about 14C and highs that rarely exceed 30C. Additionally, January receives twenty-eight millimeters of precipitation and July around seventy-five.

Sofia Weather – Winter

While temperatures dip down to 0°C during December and February, they tend to take another nose dive remaining around the -5°C in January. Night time conditions in Sofia remains chilling almost throughout the whole winter season, that also see small amounts of rain and snow falling on the Bulgaria capital city.

Sofia Weather – Spring

Thanks to the impact of the cold north and warm south air masses, weather in Sofia during the spring season is unpredictable to say the limits; while temperatures can soar during the day reaching highs of around 30C, they drop considerably during the night pushing conditions to chilly levels. The high mountains around Sofia still experience snowfall in March, although even the lower valleys of the region can occasionally see snow mounting on its terrain.

Sofia Weather – Summer

Although North-West and North-East winds occasionally cool Sofia down, both months remain the hottest of the year. In sharp contrast, July is relatively cooler with frequent daily temperatures 22C. Understandably conditions are significantly more pleasant in the mountains that surround Sofia, even when temperatures in the city hover around 35C during the day and only slightly lower during the night.

Sofia Weather – Autumn

Sofia weather during the autumn season is strongly influenced by both the big cyclones and fronts from North-West Europe and the warm south air masses that usually precede them. As a general rule, average daily temperatures usually fluctuation between 5C to 18C, although in October and even later in November Sofia experiences prolonged periods of warm weather; known locally as “gipsy summers” these spells of fine conditions can last up to two weeks. As if heralding the arrival of winter, conditions towards the end of November become foggy, rainy and increasingly colder.
