Sofia weather can be characterized as having a humid continental type of climate with high amplitudes.  Sofia is said to have summer, winter, monsoon, spring and autumn.  Usually, August is the hottest month while January is normally the coldest one.

During the summer Sofia weather can be quite hot, as the temperature can reach up to 35ºC. However, the Sofia weather during June is much cooler, when the temperature lays around 22ºC.  July and August are influenced by cool North-West and North-East winds, which moderate the weather in Sofia. The nights during the summer in Sofia are usually warm.  The temperatures in Sofia generally remain cooler than other parts of Bulgaria during summer, due to the high altitude of the valley in which it is located.

In winter, during December, January and February, the temperature generally drops down to 0°C.  In January, the average temperature of the city is usually around -4.9°C.  Winter nights in Sofia are quite chilling. Precipitation is not frequent during this season and it usually comes in small amounts.  Snowfall normally occurs in the winter in Sofia.

The annual precipitation in Sofia is around 650 mm.  Maximum rainfall occurs during spring and autumn.

The best time to visit Sofia is considered to be during the autumn and spring season.  Sofia weather in spring is influenced by cold north and warm south winds, which create a pleasantly moderate climate. The high mountain regions of the city receive snowfall in this time.  Cyclones produced from North-Western Europe, influence Sofia weather during autumn months. The temperature ranges from 5ºC to 18ºC in autumn.

A unique feature of the Sofia weather is that the city can experience a very warm climate in October or November, which is known amongst the locals as 'gypsy summer'.
